Hallo. Here we sit watching the men’s water polo. Now, first let me say that I recognize the athleticism, power and not-drowning skills of the players. And my own niece is a water polo player so I know how much work it takes. It is still hard to take them seriously in their natty war bonnets, tied in a bedraggled bow under their chins, and their perforated Teletubby ears.

Val is eating popcorn and Tuley is keeping an opportunistic eye out for errant nutritional yeast flakes. I am eating blueberries and preparing for my volunteer stint at the all-day Bug Fest tomorrow. I’m told we expect 700 people. This year’s focus is on spiders, with the saucy theme, “Because six legs aren’t enough!” There will be not only crafts and live bugs but also insect nests, carnivorous plants and something called Metamorphosis Mania.  You can also bring in a bug for the experts (which would not be me) to ID.

Last week neither of us was in peak condition, but things are looking up. Val is feeling perfectly chipper today. And a good thing, too, because she followed chipper with chopper – she did a video shoot from a doorless helicopter this morning. Her pal (and video producer) Kimberly has a gig making a video for the town of Sherwood, and hired Val to do an aerial shoot of the area.

I think there should be more helicopter work in librarianship.

Val is getting less hairy by the week. She says if anyone has a pair of spare eyebrows lying about, she could probably make good use of them one of these days. Hers are getting sparser, as is the rest of her hair, although a faint fuzz keeps growing back on her head. Does anyone know, do people have two kinds of leg hair? Like dogs? Because it seems to us that Val’s got some guard hairs left on her shins, but her soft undercoat has fallen out. She’d like it known she still has hair on her toes though. I think this means that hobbit genes are strong.

Two old friends of Val’s from Alaska are here for the weekend, Beth (with 5-year-old daughter) and Kim. The weather has returned to pretty so we’ll probably do some grilling tomorrow night. We had beans from the garden with dinner tonight, and little pear tomatoes.

  1. Thanks my little skyrider! With the wind in your face, the thrill of the elevation, the satisfaction of a worthy task and the the joy of life from a bird’s perspective – I hope you forgot all your worries for a moment and just felt nothing but the good side of life. You are much braver than me and I am so lucky to have you!
    Kimberly 🙂
